Three (3) Dominicans received the highest award of honour of the state when Dominica celebrated its thirty-first anniversary of Independence. The annual awards ceremony forms part of the National Day Parade of uniformed groups every year. Receiving the Sisserou Award for sports on behalf of Mr. Grayson Shillingford was former national cricketer, Thomas Kentish. The two other recipients of the prestigious award were Mr. Eluid T. Williams and Mrs. Jennifer O. White both for public sector management.
Eight persons (8) received the Meritorious Service award. Mr Deryck ‘Hunter’ St. Rose and Mr. Peter Norman Letang received the award for Culture and music, Mrs. Alma Cools-Latigue for Education and sports, Mrs. Hyacinth White Thomas for nursing, John Augustus Charles and Mrs. Philomen Sharplis for business, Mr. Garfield Ambo for agriculture and Mr. Emile Lancelot for community service.
The Services Medal of Honour was awarded to ten (10) persons. Mrs. Leng Sorhaindo and Mr. Francois Bannis and the Hummingbirds Band were awarded the medal for music, Miss Noreen Joseph for culture, Mr. Lewis Luke for construction. Well known bus driver Angelo ‘Fufu’ Charles was awarded the medal for transportation, well known florist Mrs. Eileen Rita Shillingford and Miss Marie-Aline Leopoldie were awarded the medals for community service. Miss Rebecca Eusebe was awarded the medal for nursing and Mrs. Cynthia Morvan and Mrs. Cynthia Albertine Bernabe for teaching.
The Long Service Award, given to persons for long standing and exemplary service in the public service, were awarded to six (6) persons. Mr. Chaucer Doctrove was awarded the medal for printing services, Mr. Julie Barnabas Williams and Miss Agathine Joseph for public service, Mr. David Andrew for police service, Mr. Ethelred Gerard ‘Cap’ Burton for postal service and Mr. Jones Eusebe for Fire and Ambulance service.
