The Dominica Social Investment Fund (DSIF) is contributing just over EC$3 (three) million in the Fisheries Sector here. This is part of the organization’s thrust in poverty alleviation as part of its overall programme to improve the living conditions of poor communities and vulnerable groups by supporting the speedy provision of basic economic and social services.

On Friday, June 26, 2009, a signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Agriculture at which time Government received the first tranche of the two point eight million East Caribbean dollars (XCD$2 800 000.00).

The Kalinago Fisheries Development Project of the Carib Territory received eighty-five thousand, five hundred East Caribbean dollars (XCD$85 500.00) for capacity building. The group received a boat with engine, safety equipment and training in fishing techniques, record keeping and financial management.

Just over one hundred and forty thousand East Caribbean dollars (XCD$140,000.00) is going to the Dubique/Stowe fishermen for the purchase of a boat, engine and safety equipment as well as the retrofitting and converting of a boat house into a locker and storage facility for the fishermen.

The Woodbridge Bay Fishermen will receive just over one hundred and twelve thousand dollars (XCD$112,000.00) for the purchase of a boat, engine, safety equipment and a walk-in freezer.

In the meantime, DSIF is reimbursing the Government of Dominica to the tune of just about EC$2.8M for fishing equipment it provided to West Coast Fishermen who lost equipment during the passage of Hurricane Omar last year. The Government of Dominica provided boats, engines, other fishing and safety equipment and material to these West Coast Fishermen who suffered lost.

One of DSIF’s mandates is to support Government in addressing emergency needs resulting from natural disasters.
