The Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS) is making available three (3) scholarships to three (3) deserving students of the Dominica State College. The announcement was made by the Association’s President, Dr. Clayton Shillingford, at a news conference called on Thursday at the Dominica State College at Stockfarm.
According to Dr. Shillingford, two students will receive support to pursue an associate degree programme in agriculture and another will receive financial support to pursue a two year associate degree in hospitality and tourism. The scholarships are being made available based on need and academic performance.

Dr. Shillingford went on to say that the scholarships may be extended beyond the Dominica State College.
“There is the potential, though the decision has not yet been made in that area, that perhaps we can get an extension of one of the scholarships to go external to a university in the United States. That is something that is under consideration.”
One of the key elements of the work of the Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences is to assist Dominicans in the field of education. As a result, the charitable organisation has a memorandum of understanding with the Dominica State College.
President of the Dominica State College, Hubert Charles, welcomed the support especially when it comes to support for students as he sees it as a means of rewarding students who are performing well.

“We at the Dominica State College are interested in two (2) key areas when it comes to student support. The first is to ensure that students who exhibit high levels of excellence are awarded and encouraged usually through a scholarship. Certainly, we would like the general public to know of their academic excellence. The second area is that students who also exhibit academic excellence but who are having some financial difficulties in terms of continuing their study. We place ourselves in a position to provide some financial support to them.”
The scholarships are being presented in memory of Willard De Fillipes and Gladys Elizabeth Peters. |
