Dominican students have shown a one point seven percent (1.7%) improvement in this year’s Caribbean Examination Council Examinations (C.X.C.) results over that of last years. Officials from the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, at a press conference held on Friday, 21st August, 2009 to release the results, were pleased at this year’s performance stating that the overall percentage pass for this year, stands at 73.8%.
Despite the increase in performance, a total of five thousand, eight hundred and forty-six (5 846) subject entries were registered, a decrease of one hundred and twenty-five (125) over last year’s five thousand, nine hundred and seventy-one (5 971) entries.
The Nehemiah Comprehensive School registered an overall pass of one hundred percent (100%) (it must be noted that the Nehemiah Comprehensive School only had three persons writing the exams) with Convent High School coming in second with ninety-four point eight percent (94.8%). The Dominica Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School registered 93.8%, Saint Mary’s Academy 86%, Dominica Grammar School 79.5%, Orion Academy 75.7%, St. Martin Secondary 72.4%, Portsmouth Secondary School 67.8%, Castle Bruce Secondary School 66.7%, Wesley High School 64.5%, North East Comprehensive School 62.4%, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School 62.3%, Goodwill Secondary School 60.2%, Pierre Charles Secondary School and the Dominica Community High School 55.2%,
Among the top performers for this year were David Hodge from the Dominica Grammar School and Erron Estrado of the St Mary’s Academy according to Chief Education Officer, Steve Hyacinth.

“Students who received very high passes in this year’s examinations for 2009 are: David Francis Hodge Junior of the Dominica Grammar School and Erron E. Estrado of the St. Mary’s Academy – nine ones and one two; Kimberly H. A. Lawrence of the Convent High School and Sydney John Michael Jules of the Saint Mary’s Academy – nine ones and Emma L. Etherington of the Convent High School – eight ones.”
The following subjects showed increased performances at Grades one to three over last year: English A and B, Chemistry, Clothing and Texture, Information Technology (T) and (G), Integrated Science, Principles of Accounts, Social Studies, Spanish, Technical Drawing and Building Tech (woods).
Subjects receiving over ninety percent pass rate were: Food and Nutrition – 94%, Home Management – 92.9%, Information Technology (G) – 100%, Integrated Science – 96.4%, Physical Education – 96.6% and Building Technology (woods) – 93.6%.
Dominica’s performance of students achieving grades one to three in English A, this year stands at 64.9%, 13.1% higher than the Caribbean average which stands at 51%.
Subjects that recorded a decrease in performance were Agricultural Science Single and Double Award, Biology, Caribbean History, Electricity, Mathematics, Music, Office Administration and EPDM (Electronic Documentation, Preparation and Management). |
